A yard or a dealership lot is a large, open, well-lit area holding a great deal of value, with no one on it for two thirds of every day. It differs from a building in ways that matter for camera design: the assets are outdoors and mobile, the boundary is long, the lighting was installed for driving and display rather than for imaging, and much of the theft is committed by people who arrive in a vehicle, work for a few minutes, and drive out. Coverage that works here is built around vehicles and around the specific things people come for, not around the fence line.

Securing a car dealership lot at night

Dealerships have an unusual problem: the stock is deliberately displayed to be visible and accessible from the road, which is exactly the opposite of what a security layout would ask for. You cannot fence the front row, and the lighting is designed to make cars look good rather than to give a camera a usable subject. So the design compromise sits in the analytics rules rather than the physical layout.

  • Cover the rows length-wise. A camera looking down a row sees every gap between vehicles. A camera looking across rows sees the roof of the nearest car.
  • Escalate on dwell, not on presence. People walk across dealership lots at night for legitimate and harmless reasons. Someone remaining between vehicles, moving low, or returning to the same vehicle repeatedly is the pattern worth a live look.
  • Watch the perimeter approaches, including the road frontage. The most common arrival is a vehicle parking on the street and one or two people walking in — which the gate camera never sees.

One thing we would tell you not to buy: full coverage of every vehicle. A large lot cannot be covered to identification standard at any reasonable cost, and trying produces a system nobody maintains. Cover the approaches and the rows to a standard that supports a live decision, and accept that the identification-grade camera is at the entrance.

Stopping fuel and equipment theft from a yard

Fuel theft has a distinctive signature: it is repeatable, it is quick, and it usually recurs at the same site because the first visit established that nothing happens. That makes early intervention unusually valuable — interrupting the first or second visit often ends the pattern, whereas a site that has been drawn from for three months has become part of someone's route.

Can cameras tell me if equipment has not moved in a week?

This is a genuinely useful question and the answer needs a distinction. Video analytics answer it indirectly and well, and directly only in a narrow sense. Indirectly: if a machine is in a monitored area, the record of every vehicle movement in that area is also a record of when anything last moved. Reviewing activity in a zone over a week tells you what has been idle without needing the system to track individual assets. Many yards get most of the value this way.

Directly — "machine 41 has not moved since Tuesday" — is asset tracking rather than video analytics, and the honest answer is that telematics does it better. Most modern plant, and most rental fleets, already report engine hours and location. Where video adds something telematics cannot is context: telematics tells you the machine moved, video tells you who moved it and whether a trailer left the gate behind it. If the question is utilisation, buy telematics. If the question is whether the movement was authorised, that is what the cameras are for.

The one video-native version of this worth setting up is an absence rule on a defined space — a bay, a marked area, a parking position — that should always contain something. That fires when the space is empty at a time nobody scheduled a move, and it is a cheap, reliable early warning for a small number of very high-value assets.
