VuePoint's engineering and operations run out of a single office at 2780 S. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, Nevada.
The location is not incidental. Southern Nevada is a fairly unforgiving test environment for the kind of hardware we build, and being inside it changes how quickly problems get found.
Why the desert is a useful place to build solar hardware
- Heat is the real enemy of battery life, and it is not a laboratory abstraction here. A unit that holds up through a Las Vegas August is not going to be surprised by much.
- Dust is constant. Lens contamination degrades detection gradually enough that nobody notices until it is bad — a failure mode much easier to take seriously when it happens in your own yard.
- Sun is abundant, which is a trap. Solar sizing done in a place with excellent irradiance is exactly how you end up with a unit that fails in a northern winter. Designing here means deliberately designing against conditions we do not experience.
- Construction is everywhere. Active sites — the environment these units are built for — are a short drive in any direction.
One place, on purpose
Engineering, operations and support are in the same building. For a company whose product is hardware in the field feeding software in the cloud, the distance between the person who wrote the detection logic and the person who takes the call about a unit behaving oddly is a real variable — and the shortest useful distance is a few metres.
It also means the field procedures we publish come from people who have actually done the install. The troubleshooting guides are written from deployments, including the ones that went wrong.
