VuePoint Launches a Tripod-Mounted Solar Analytics Unit

VuePoint has launched a tripod-mounted, entirely solar-powered analytics unit — built for sites with no grid power and no network, and light enough that siting it is a one-person job rather than a logistics exercise.

The mobile surveillance category has been built on the trailer for years. A road chassis, a mast, ballast to hold the mast up, and a battery bank to run it. That design works, and it sets a floor under what site coverage costs: a vehicle with a hitch to move it, a licensed driver, space to park it, and a unit heavy enough that once it is placed it tends to stay placed.

Removing the chassis and the ballast removes their cost. The unit is priced at under $1,000 per unit per month.

What the weight change actually enables

• It ships internationally as ordinary freight. A road trailer is a vehicle, with the customs and compliance overhead that implies. A tripod unit is cargo. This is the change that makes overseas sites practical rather than theoretical.
• It goes where a truck can't. Interior courtyards, rooftops, upper floors of a structure under construction, the middle of a field.
• It moves when the site moves. On a job that changes shape every fortnight, a unit two people can reposition in minutes actually gets repositioned.
• It is a poorer theft target. A trailer holds resale value as a trailer, independent of what is mounted on it.

The trade is height. A tripod puts the camera at a few metres rather than at the top of an extended mast, so it covers points — a gate, a store, a compound, a fence line — rather than sweeping a large open area from a single position. For sites that genuinely need one very high vantage point, a mast is still the right answer, and we have written up where each fits.

Analysis happens on the unit

The unit connects over cellular and does its analysis at the edge. That is not a preference — continuously streaming full-resolution video over a cellular link exhausts a data plan quickly and is the least useful thing to do with the connection. What travels is the event, the metadata and a short evidence clip; full footage stays on the unit and is pulled on demand for the small number of events anyone reviews.
