Parking lot security cameras: what works on open ground after dark
A parking lot is the hardest ordinary site to cover well — wide, flat, badly lit, and full of vehicles that block every sightline you had at ground level. Height fixes more of it than camera count does.

The problem with parking lot cameras is not detection, it is sightlines. A lot is wide, flat and low-contrast, and once it fills with vehicles a camera at head height sees a wall of roofs. Almost every disappointing parking lot deployment traces back to cameras mounted too low, too far from what matters, or covering area rather than the routes people use to enter and leave. Mounting height and placement decide the outcome; sensor resolution barely enters into it.
Where the cameras go
Cover the movement, not the acreage. Everything that happens in a lot arrives and leaves through a small number of points, and those points are where a camera earns its place.
- Every vehicle entrance and exit. Non-negotiable, and the only place a plate is realistically readable — see below.
- Pedestrian desire lines. The gap in the hedge, the path from the back of the lot to the building door, the shortcut everyone actually takes rather than the one that was designed.
- The back rows. Lots are stripped from the far end, away from the building and usually beyond the lighting. This is where converter theft happens.
- Stairwells, lift lobbies and the ground level of structures. In a garage these are the incident locations; the parking decks themselves are usually quieter.
- Any area that is dark at 22:00. Walk the lot at night before deciding placement. The map you have in your head is the daytime one.

Can cameras read licence plates in a parking lot?
Only from a camera positioned specifically to do it, and one camera does one lane. Plate capture needs a shallow angle to the plate, a tight field of view, a controlled distance, and an exposure set for a retroreflective plate rather than for the scene — which is why plate cameras produce dark, ugly images of everything except the plate. A general overview camera covering the entrance will show you that a white pickup arrived at 02:14 and will not give you the plate. If plates matter, budget a dedicated camera per lane and site it on the approach.
Lighting is half the system
Infrared range is much shorter than people assume, and in a large lot the far rows are usually beyond it. Uniform, moderate lighting beats bright pools with dark gaps, because a camera exposing for a bright patch loses everything around it. Two specific fixes solve most night-time parking lot complaints: raise the light levels at the back rows, and stop pointing lights into camera lenses. What cameras can honestly do is narrow: establish the pattern (which vehicles, which hours, since when), give an accurate factual record for outreach services or counsel, and provide early notice of the safety issues that sometimes accompany it — open fires, propane, blocked access routes.
What they cannot do is resolve it. Anyone selling cameras as a solution to encampments is selling you a documentation system and calling it something else. The record is useful precisely because the process that follows — outreach, notice, legal steps — depends on accurate dates and facts rather than recollection.
