What is remote video monitoring, and how does it actually work?

Cameras that raise an event to a person off-site while something is still happening, instead of recording it for someone to find afterwards. What that involves, and what the category names mean.

Remote video monitoring is a camera system that raises an event to a person located off-site while it is still happening. Software watches the feeds, decides which activity matters, and pushes that moment to a monitoring centre or an on-call responder with a live view attached. The person then does something about it — speaks through a loudspeaker, calls the site contact, calls the police. The distinction from ordinary CCTV is entirely about when a human sees the footage: during, rather than three days later.

From camera to response

    Cameras cover the areas that matter

    Not the whole property — the approaches, the gates, the equipment, the places someone has to cross to reach something valuable. Coverage is a placement decision and it determines everything downstream.

    Analytics filter the feed continuously

    What survives the filter goes to a monitoring centre or an on-call responder, with a clip, a timestamp and a live view of the camera that raised it. This is the step that makes it monitoring rather than recording.

    Typically: a spoken warning through an on-site speaker, a call to the site contact, a call to police with a description of what is being watched live, or nothing at all because it turned out to be the caretaker. A human makes this call, not the software.

    The event is logged with its evidence

    Time, camera, clip, what the operator did. This is the record that settles the insurance question, the delivery dispute or the police report later.

Why a human is still in the loop

The software is good at answering is there a person in this area at this time. It is not good at answering should we escalate this. A contractor collecting a forgotten tool at 9pm and someone casing a compound at 9pm produce very similar detections and require completely different responses. Nothing currently on the market reliably tells those apart, and any vendor claiming otherwise is describing an aspiration.

So the division of labour is fixed: software reduces thousands of hours of video to a handful of events; a trained person decides what each one warrants. We say this plainly because the alternative framing — fully autonomous intervention — misrepresents how every system in this category, ours included, actually works.

What a video-verified alarm is, and why it matters

A video-verified alarm is a call to police in which the caller can describe what they are watching happen right now — how many people, where, what they are doing — rather than reporting that a sensor tripped. Many police jurisdictions treat a verified call differently from an unverified one, and several charge fees for repeat false alarms from unverified systems. The specifics are set locally, so check your own jurisdiction rather than trusting a vendor's summary of it.

Does remote monitoring work on a site with no power or internet?

Yes, and this is the case that makes the category interesting rather than incremental. Solar generation and a battery bank cover power; a cellular modem covers the network. The constraint is data: streaming continuous video from several cameras over cellular exhausts a plan in days. The workable design runs the analytics on the unit itself and sends only events and stills, opening a live stream only when an operator asks for one. What it costs, roughly

Our solar, cellular-connected units are under $1,000 per unit per month, which covers the hardware, the connectivity, the analytics and the software. Where remote video monitoring is a poor fit

  • Anywhere the response has to be physical and immediate. Opening a gate, escorting someone off, checking a door handle. A camera cannot do those. A guard can.
  • Interior spaces already covered by a good alarm. A sealed building with contact and motion sensors is a solved problem; adding monitored cameras there buys context, not capability.
  • Sites where the camera cannot see the thing you care about. Dense stacked material, deep interiors, anywhere with no vantage point. Placement is the binding constraint and no amount of software relieves it.
  • Where the real problem is process, not visibility. If the gate is left open every night, cameras will document that reliably and change nothing.

Common questions

What is remote video monitoring?
It is a camera system where software filters the feeds continuously and pushes the activity that matters to a person off-site while it is still happening. That person sees a live view and a clip, and decides what to do — a spoken warning, a call to the site contact, or a call to police. Ordinary CCTV records the same event; remote monitoring is the arrangement where someone actually sees it in time to act.
What is the difference between remote video monitoring and CCTV?
Timing, mostly. CCTV records so footage can be found after an incident. Remote video monitoring puts a person on the event while it is happening. The cameras can be identical — the difference is the analytics layer that decides what to escalate and the monitoring arrangement behind it. Existing CCTV can often be brought into a monitoring service without replacement.
Is virtual guarding the same as remote video monitoring?
Yes. Virtual guarding, remote guarding, live video monitoring and remote camera monitoring are all names for the same service. There is no agreed technical line between them. Judge providers on whether a human is genuinely watching, how the software filters events, and what the operator is authorised to do — not on which term they use.
Do real people watch the cameras, or is it all AI?
Both, in a fixed division of labour. Software reduces continuous video to a small number of events, because no operator can usefully watch dozens of quiet feeds. A trained person then judges each event and decides the response. The software does not decide to intervene — it decides what is worth a person's attention.
Does remote video monitoring work without power or internet on site?
Yes. Solar panels and a battery bank supply power, and a cellular modem supplies the network. The design constraint is data volume: continuous video over cellular is unaffordable, so the analytics run on the unit and only events, stills and on-demand live streams are sent. This is the standard arrangement for construction sites, yards and vacant land.
Can remote monitoring operators call the police?
Yes — an operator can call and describe what they are watching live, which is what makes it a video-verified alarm rather than an unverified sensor trip. What we cannot do, and no provider can, is control whether or how quickly police respond. Any published police response time in this category should be treated as marketing rather than a commitment.
How many cameras do I need for remote monitoring to be worthwhile?
There is no minimum that makes it work, but there is a threshold where it starts making sense: when the areas you care about cannot all be seen from one vantage point, or when the site is unattended for long enough that nobody would notice a problem for hours. A single well-placed unit covering the one approach everything crosses often beats six cameras covering everything shallowly.
