How fast can security cameras be deployed on a new site?

Fixed camera installs are paced by power, cabling and trades. Self-contained solar units are paced by scheduling and access. Knowing which of those you are buying is the difference between cover this weekend and cover next quarter.

Deployment time is set almost entirely by whether the cameras need site infrastructure. A fixed install waits on power, cable routes, mounting points and whichever trade owns each of those, so the schedule is a construction schedule and is measured in weeks. A self-contained solar unit — a tripod or a trailer carrying its own power, cellular connectivity and mounting — arrives with nothing to wait for, so the schedule is a logistics one and is measured in hours on site. Same cameras, same analytics, completely different critical path.

That is the whole answer, but the useful part is knowing what still takes time in the fast case, because it is not the equipment.

Deploying on a new job site

The mistake worth avoiding on construction sites is sequencing security behind the build. Theft exposure is highest at the two moments when the site has least infrastructure: right at the start, when materials are being delivered to an open lot with no power and no fence, and near the end, when finished mechanical, electrical and copper are sitting in a building that anyone can walk into. A camera plan that waits for permanent power covers neither.

A workable sequence

    Before first delivery

    Put a self-contained unit at the material laydown area and the site entrance. This is the window with the least fencing and the most exposure, and it is the one most often left uncovered.

    As the site takes shape

    Move the units. That is the point of them. Coverage should follow the value — the laydown area today, the loading dock and the plant compound next month.

    Once permanent power exists

    Add fixed cameras where the coverage requirement is permanent, and keep the mobile units for the parts of the site that are still moving.

    At handover

    Decide deliberately whether coverage transfers to the owner, or leaves with you. This is routinely forgotten and creates a gap on exactly the day the building is full of finished, portable, expensive things.

On private property, within the boundary, and not attached to a structure, a trailer-mounted unit is normally treated as equipment rather than as a fixture — the same as a generator or a site cabin. Where that changes is predictable: anything on or overhanging the public right of way, anything in a historic or design-controlled district, height limits in some residential zones, and any site whose own planning conditions or landlord agreement covers temporary structures. Ask the authority having jurisdiction before deployment rather than after, because the cost of getting it wrong is being told to move it, not a fine.

Securing a site over a long holiday shutdown

A shutdown concentrates every risk factor at once: nobody on site, deliveries stopped, neighbouring businesses closed, reduced police and patrol availability, and a window long enough for someone to return two or three times. It is also completely predictable, which makes it the easiest exposure to plan for and the most frustrating one to lose to.

  1. Book the coverage early. Shutdown periods are when demand for temporary units peaks. Arranging it a fortnight before the break is the single most effective thing on this list.
  2. Walk the site and consolidate. Move portable plant, tools, copper and fuel into one area that one camera position can genuinely cover. Coverage is cheaper than dispersal.
  3. Confirm the escalation chain in writing. Who is called at 2am on a public holiday, what number, what is the second number, and who is authorised to approve a police call. Rotas made in November do not survive contact with December.
  4. Check what the site looks like empty. Gate lights left off, a floodlight on a timer that follows an occupied schedule, a generator that will be shut down. Empty-site conditions differ from the ones the cameras were commissioned in.
  5. Verify the escalation path works before you leave. Trigger a test event and confirm somebody's phone actually rings. Do this on the last working day, not on the first day back.

Emergency and incident response deployments

After a fire, a break-in, a storm or an act of vandalism, the requirement is coverage today at a location that has just lost whatever infrastructure it had. This is what self-contained units are for, and the questions we will ask are short: where can the unit physically stand, who can let it in, what needs to be in frame, and who takes the call when something happens. One honest caveat about all of the above: nothing here is a guaranteed response time. Deployment speed depends on unit availability, travel distance and site access, and any provider quoting you a fixed number without asking about those three has not checked.
